Cambodia Medical / Educational Outreach July 2019

Medical outreach to rural villages in Siem Reap, Cambodia
July 4th to 14th ,2019
Cambodia is a charming Asian country with beautiful landscapes, traditions, and friendly people. Yet, it endured a painful past from the Khmer Rouge. Cambodia is now in its third decade of peace and economic growth. It has made great strides in reducing poverty and health improvement. Despite these gains, significant obstacles remain. Democracy and human rights continue to be a challenge, natural resources have been rapidly depleted through illegal logging and poaching, inadequate nutrition has stunted over 30 percent of children, and human trafficking still persists.

Cambodian citizens are responsible for a large share of their healthcare expenses. While healthcare in large city is adequate, healthcare services are minimal to nonexistence in the rural villages. Traveling to the cities from rural villages to receive treatment is cost prohibiting. Many of them have not received checkups or medical treatments for many years.

Since 2018, Phoenix International Foundation, in partnership with Save Elephant Foundation, leads a medical outreach in a remote village of Oddar Meanchey province. PIF provides medical examination and medical treatment to a variety of illnesses. In 2019, Phoenix International Foundation and the Province of Oddar Meanchey entered into a memorandum of understanding to cooperate in the medical outreach effort in the villages.

In July 2019, we will again return to Cambodia to continue our outreach efforts. This upcoming mission will expand to the outlying villages in the Siem Reap area.

The first part of the mission we will be based in Siem Reap: each day we will be commuting to a different village to provide medical evaluation for local villagers.
The second part of the mission we will be traveling to the Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary, we will be housed in huts situated inside the parks. We will be setting up clinic within the sanctuary and villagers will come to our medical camp for checkup.
We will be providing transportation and a Kamer interpreter for each volunteer.
The cost of the trip is US$700.00. This will include all land transportation, hotel accommodation while in Siem Reap, accommodation in the elephant park. Three meals daily and travel insurance.
What is not included: Round trip flight, visa, and personal expenses.
